My friend Gary and I tried to hang with my sons and their friends. Bad idea.

In my newest Biking4Boomers video I go mountain biking with my fellow boomer Gary as we try to keep up with my two oldest sons and their friends.

As I wrote and recorded earlier here in 2021, I have undertaken an awesome re-build of my five-year-old Santa Cruz Tallboy.

It has fancy new wheels, a new drive train, and a bunch of shiny red anodized parts to set it off. Eventually, I’ll pimp it out even more.

With the weather on the cold side, we’ve all been mountain biking and leaving the road bikes in the garage.

Let’s face it, the wind chill is a lot lower when you’re traveling 8 mph! Here in Roanoke, Va. we are blessed to have Carvins Cove in our back yard. The Cove features miles and miles of mountain bike trails and most of them are perfect for us Baby Boomers.

Boomers keeping up. Bike FOMO even with the Tallboy

I didn’t mention this in the video, but even with my “new” tallboy, I was the only one not riding a carbon frame. In fact, all the boys and even fellow boomer Gary have super light wheels and components.

I’m not making excuses. Even if we swapped bikes, the results would be the same. And, while you would have to pry the Tallboy from my cold dead fingers before I’d give it up, it seemed odd to have so much machinery under me and still be a bit behind the curve!

So be it.

I hope you will check out the latest video, and subscribe to the channel PLEASE! (Sorry to be so needy.)

I mentioned in the video that Gary and I had ridden in Montana. If you are looking for the next bucket list ride, you owe it to yourself to conquer the Going to the Sun Road. To date, it is the most awesome ride I’ve ever done. If you want something easier — you might try the Burlington Bikeway in Vermont, where the ride takes you into the middle of Lake Champlain!
