Video tours of the trails at Carvins Cove
Christmas was good this year.
Santa brought me an Insta 360 Camera. And I’m already putting it to use on the trails at Carvins Cove.
The Cove, in Virginia’s Blue Ridge, the region surrounding Roanoke, is becoming a mecca for mountain bikers.
Some would say it already is. But I think it’s just scratching the surface.
Back to the Camera
The beauty of a 360 camera is that it shoots video all around you no matter where you go.
Then, you can show pretty much whatever you passed when you are editing.
If there is ice on Carvins Cove, (the small lake that is the water supply for the region) I can show you that. Tall trees, I can pan up. Excellent, hand-crafted trail work by volunteers, I can slow down and show you that.
And I can do all this simply by mounting the camera on my bike or helmet and forgetting about it while I ride.
The Carvins Cove Trail Series
Riding Carvins Cove in winter is perhaps even better than the warmer months. The leaves are off the trees, and you can see out through the woods. There are no insects to worry about. And except for a few weeks in spring when the frost is coming out of the ground, the trails are often mud free. (We ask that you avoid the trails during the mud season in order to protect them.)
I’ve been riding the “lowers” and taking videos with the new camera, and I’ve been happy with the results. The lowers are the easier trails at the cove, which are graded like ski slopes, Beginner, Intermediate, Expert, etc. Most of these are beginner or intermediate. The harder ones, the “uppers” go up and down the surrounding mountains.
Having said that — very few are true beginner trails where you would take a small child. On the other hand, I’ve taken a few first-time mountain bikers to the cove and ridden the lowers with few problems.
So click on the video, which is tied to a playlist including other videos from Carvins Cove.
Hope to see you out there!
